Adventure tour through the Gerolsteiner Land
Gerolstein
SIXTY KILOMETERS AND TWO WHEELS
... a tour by eBike or normal bicycle around the fountain town of Gerolstein, famous for its sparkling water, is full of adventure. Water, volcanism, craft tradition and crime stories are the themes that give the pleasant adrenaline kick.
The cycle tour is a feast for the senses in many respects. It reveals millennia-old secrets of geology with densely forested volcanic cones, maars and mineral-rich springs. The Helenenquelle spring in Gerolstein is one of these testimonies. Even the people of antiquity and the Middle Ages knew how to use the treasures of volcanism. They left behind mystical rock landscapes such as the interior of the Arensberg volcano or the ice caves high above Hohenfels, where they mined the basalt for millstones. But modern culture also gives you goose bumps, as the crime house in Hillesheim is considered one of the largest collections for fans of detective novels and crime series. Thanks to the power of the water, the ups and downs of the fire mountains became the idyllic floodplain of the Bolsdorf valley a few kilometres away. The Historic Mill in Birgel shows how important the milling trade was for the Eifel until the early 20th century. At Steffeln in the volcanic garden with the Eichholzmaar, the spectacular history of the earth can once again be intensely felt. A day trip by bike could not be more varied.
Sixty kilometres on the adventure tour through the Gerolsteiner Land are the quintessence of the Volcanic Eifel. The crowning glory is a detour on foot to the summit of the Rother Kopf. Up here, the view is unobstructed of a wonderful Eifel panorama - and an ice cave is also waiting to be explored.
