Infopunkt römische Villenanlage, Duppach-Weiermühle

Duppach

Very close to the important Roman road from Trier to Cologne, wealthy landlords built an impressive estate, which included residential and stable buildings and an iron smelter.

A burial field with two grave pillars measuring more than 20 m is astonishing. In terms of quality, they were comparable to the Igel Column, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

On one of the memorials there were two giant sandstone grippers attached. Take a look at the remains on site! You will also find a replica of a Roman storage building with information on Roman history, excavation history and the work of archaeologists.

A seating circle made of Roman stones invites you to rest and linger.

In antiquity, the property was easily visible from the Roman highway and easily accessible by a private road, which was extremely disadvantageous in times of massive terror by Germanic gangs. The villa was obviously looted and abandoned. In late Roman times, simple people lived in one of the outbuildings.

Vulkan Goldberg

The quaternary volcano Goldberg, northeast of the municipality Ormont, is the northwesternmost foothill of the quaternary volcanic field in the Westeifel. The volcano is 649.1 meters above normal zero. The Goldberg was formed about 10 to 11,000 years ago in two eruptions. First, a large ash cone was formed. The second eruption phase began after a short time, which at first exploded the top of the old cinder cone with a strong explosion. Then again a cinder cone was built up on the leftovers and the activity ceased after a certain time.
