Römerstraße - Esch
Esch
The course of the former Roman road in the forest area between Esch and Dahlem/Schmidtheim can still be very well tracked. It is visible as an approximately 1-1.5 m high dam parallel to today's forest road.
The Roman road from Trier to Cologne in the area of Esch was connected with Rome and the rest of the Roman Empire by a network of well-developed highways. In contrast to the natural paths of Germanic and Celtic origin, they were not only passable independently of the moisture of the soil, but above all, made their way straight through forests, plains and the mountains. Their technical secret of success was the layer construction of the streets. For the first time, it was possible to move troops quickly and in large numbers from one place to another with intact road links in order to keep the rule and conquer new territories.
