Rund um den Mordhügel (Around the murder hill)
Nohn
The Nohn hike Rund um den Mordhügel "Around the murder hill" is one of two element trails on which the influences of the four elements water, fire, air and earth on the formation of the landscape and the cultural-historical development of the Volcanic Eifel can be explored. It leads from the village of Nohn over the Mordhügel hill to the former Burgkopf quarry, an old quarry that filled up with water after it was closed down, and back through the valley of the Nohn stream through an impressive landscape.
The former basalt quarry on the Burgkopf hilltop is no longer in operation. All that remains of the quarry is a large lake, under the surface of which the mining levels are hidden. Basalt mining characterised Hoffeld well into the 20th century. To ensure that the history of the basalt quarry is not forgotten, the former winch house, where the lorries were pulled out of the levels, has been "reactivated": Equipped with information boards, it provides hikers with information (www.aw-wiki.de).
"murder hill" - is the traditional name and macabre designation for the elevation. Perhaps this is the reason why folklore has many a gruesome tale to tell about this hill (Heimatjahrbuch LK Vulkaneifel 1997).
