Volcano Trail
Hillesheim
The Volcano Trail takes you to the Arensberg volcano, a Tertiary volcanic peak and one of the biggest attractions in Gerolsteiner Land. In the middle of the volcano - without getting hot feet.
The starting point for this hike is the tourist information office in Hillesheim. From here we follow the trail marking of the black 3 on a white background and leave Hillesheim in the direction of Walsdorf. South of Walsdorf, in an oval basin, is the Walsdorfer Trockenmaar. It is one of the largest dry meadows in the Eifel and covers an area of 115 ha. Many rare and protected plants can be found here, such as wild orchids.
We now make a wide arc around the small Eifel community, past the Arnulphus Chapel and arrive at the Arensberg. This geological attraction shows an important volcano from the Tertiary period. You can enter the crater through a tunnel and get an idea of the geological conditions for yourself. The visitor is right in the volcanic vent zone.
From here, this relatively easy circular walk takes us back to Hillesheim.
