Volcanoes, Maars & water springs (South) Geo-Roundtrip Duppach
Steffeln
At Eichholzmaar, the northernmost water-filled maar in the Eifel, two attractive adventure circuits (approx. 10 km per loop) have been created. Three ferruginous springs with refreshing mineral water, rare birds and plants, the impressive volcanic garden in Steffeln and the Knauf adventure forge in Duppach are just some of the many attractions along the two circuits.
The Eichholzmaar is an impressive yet quiet place of power at the centre of the circular routes, where the gorse blooms in spring and rare water and meadow birds can be observed all year round. The adventure circular trail takes in the Duppacher Drees, Steffelner Drees and Aueler Drees, three ferruginous springs with refreshing mineral water. A volcanological highlight is undoubtedly the Steffeln volcanic garden. But the impressive cut of a tufa ring below the church in Steffeln and the Knauf adventure smithy in Duppach are also worthwhile destinations along the way.
Great distant views await hikers at the "Eifelblick Heilert", on the Duppacher Höhe and at the Steffeln Volcano Garden. As a bonus, there is a griffin's head from Roman times at the Roman excavation site Duppach Weiermühle, when a magnificent Villa Rustica was located on the banks of the Duppacher Weiher Maar, which was probably filled with water at the time, only 800 m from the Roman Trier - Cologne trunk road running along the heights.
Parking spaces to access the adventure loops can be found in Steffeln, Duppach, at the Steffeln Volcano Garden and at Eichholzmaar.
Tip: At the Vulkanhotel Steffelberg and the Landgasthof Sünnen in Steffeln you can enjoy typical regional dishes and replenish your energy reserves after a strenuous hike.
