War memorial Stadtkyll

Stadtkyll

The war memorial for the fallen soldiers of the 1st World War on the Hasenberg in Stadtkyll.

War memorials commemorate soldiers who died in wars. In many European countries they are part of the urban landscape. In Germany, some were erected on the occasion of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 - 1871. Many war memorials were also erected in the 1920s and 1930s to commemorate the First World War. In the second half of the 20th century, memorials for the fallen soldiers and civilians who lost their lives in the Second World War were added in many places.

In many places, the donors were communities, church congregations and private individuals. The monuments are therefore mostly located at or in churches and are often limited to a list of the names of the fallen.

War memorials from the First World War usually do not display national symbols, since not only was the war lost, but the empire had also fallen and the old army had been disbanded. Rather, they often show the Iron Cross, oak leaves, sword and steel helmet as well as Christian symbolism, as is the case here with the "soldier with steel helmet" on the round arch wall and the 3 oak crosses on the end of the arch.

The Stadtkyll memorial was erected in 1934. The memorial was designed by Professor Emil Fahrenkamp, an architect and university lecturer who was head of the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1937 to 1946.

The 30 soldiers from Stadtkyll who lost their lives in the First World War are commemorated. Their names are engraved on the sarcophagus in the crypt of the memorial.

Since the Second World War claimed many more victims in Stadtkyll, not only soldiers but also civilians, a large cemetery of honour with a memorial for over 400 dead was built in the village at the cemetery north of the community. The war dead are commemorated there every year on Remembrance Day in mid-November.
