Traditionally, the Eifelverein Gerolstein hikes to the Löwenburgfelsen for the New Year's salute shooting. The meeting point is at 10.00 AM at Brunnenplatz. Hiking enthusiasts and guests from Gerolstein are cordially invited to take part in the free two-hour guided hike. Registration is not necessary. The hikers are expected at the Löwenburg ruins at around 12:00 noon with a New Year's greeting and a gun salute.

The New Year's gun salute from the Löwenburg rock begins immediately after the New Year's greeting from the town mayor and the midday ringing of the Gerolstein churches. The unrivalled location of the fountain town between the imposing dolomite rocks offers unique conditions, especially for the salute shooting. The breathtaking backdrop alone guarantees a spectacular start to the new calendar year. The extraordinary New Year's experience during the salute shooting is completed by the piercing use of firecrackers of various large calibres, hand-held firecrackers, trumpets, horns and fanfares, whose echo reverberates off the rocks in a unique way. Saluting gunners and wind instruments with a wide variety of facets alternate in the course of the salute shooting and ensure an unforgettable listening experience.

After the gun salute, the New Year is toasted together. During a cosy get-together at the Löwenburg, guests will be offered warm food by the Gerolstein local DRK association.
