Stauseerunde mit dem Eifelverein Gerolstein

May 4, 2025

Gerolstein

The 9 km hiking route initially heads towards Sandborn and meets the "Heimatpfad" with its large geological clock. After crossing K 33, we ascend towards Roth. There we reach the Millstone Caves/Ice Caves. Millstones were mined in underground galleries. The caves were also used as ice caves for a long time. Those who want to enter a cave should bring a good flashlight. After a short ascent, we find ourselves on the volcanic cone "Rother Kopf." From here, there are beautiful views into the Oosbach Valley, as well as northward. From there, we hike back along the Eifelsteig past the "Rother Hecke" to the starting point and namesake of the tour - the "Stausee". A final stop is planned.

Feuerberge der Eifel - „Der Arensberg“
Jul 15, 2025

In addition to an interactive introduction to volcanology and rock science for budding volcanologists, in this workshop we dedicate ourselves to individual accessible volcanoes and what they offer and can be seen in them. We will look for interesting stones and minerals, learn about their differences in colour, hardness and other properties and then know, for example, whether they are of volcanic origin. Sturdy shoes and (weather) appropriate clothing are recommended. Photo equipment, magnifying glass, container for rock samples are useful. Price: per participant 8,00 €, per family with children 20,00 €, Info/registration required by 4pm the day before: Alfred Graff, mobile 0172 2661284, email: vulkan-ag@arcor.de

Der Westwall im Oberen Kylltal
May 14, 2025 - Sep 17, 2025

The Siegfried Line was a military defense system on the western border of the German Reich that was around 630 km long and consisted of over 18,000 bunkers, tunnels and countless trenches and anti-tank barriers. It ran from Kleve on the Dutch border southwards to the Swiss border. The complex was built by the National Socialists between 1936 and 1940. Our hike leads to numerous remnants (bunkers, anti-tank ditches, hump line) of the Westwall.
