Apr 19, 2025 - Oct 23, 2025

Birgel

Experience the largest operational technology museum

Experience the vibrant past at our historical watermill in Birgel! On selected days, the technology museum comes to life and takes you on a journey back to the time when mills, stationary engines, and steam engines set the pace of progress.

Be inspired by the impressive variety of our fully operational machines: from the majestic steam engine built in 1917, to the mechanical oil press that has been producing fresh oil for over 130 years, to the three-story gristmill that forms the heart of the mill. Every detail tells a story of craftsmanship, ingenuity, and hard work.

All attractions can be admired in full functionality

Steam Engine
Admire the fully functional steam engine, built in 1917. The machine, with a power of 80KW, was disassembled by us and rebuilt in our mill.

Mechanical Oil Press
For over 130 years, this oil press has been producing fresh oil. It reaches a capacity of 300 liters per day for the extraction of rapeseed oil.

Grinding Wheel
In addition to the oil press and the steam engine, the grinding wheel is another historical tool that can be admired in full functionality.

Mechanical Lathe
Our lathe, powered by the steam engine, is suitable for milling, drilling, and machining metal.

Mustard Mill
In our mustard mill, powered by a 100-year-old Peugeot engine, we still produce our legendary mill mustard today.

Gristmill
Another highlight of our historical watermill is the gristmill. It extends over three floors. Admire the process of flour production from start to finish.

Water Turbine
The water turbine is the heart of the gristmill. With 25HP, it enables the grinding of up to 70 quintals of flour in a single milling operation.

Crushing Machine
In our crushing machine, grains are ground into grist and prepared for further processing.

Diesel Generators & Engines
Many of our attractions are powered by old generators and engines, giving an impression of how handwork has been replaced by machines.

Scooping Brewery
In our scooping brewery, you will learn how the monks brewed beer over 150 years ago. Today, we produce our delicious mill beer here.

Schnapps Distillery
In the wood-fired schnapps distillery, our delicious mill schnapps is distilled from self-made mash.

Children's Program: Baking Bread
We show you how to bake bread in a traditional way in a wood oven. Of course, with our own mill flour.

Children's Program: Making Muesli
Together, you will make your own muesli with us. Oats will be hand-hammered and then mixed with other ingredients.

Children's Program: Making Mustard
We will make your own mustard together, tailored to your taste and using our mill ingredients.

Children's Program: Pressing Oil
No heavy equipment is needed to press oil. We will show you how to prepare your own cooking oil with just a few simple steps.
