Wanderung zum "Scheewen Sunnech" nach Gees mit dem Eifelverein Gerolstein
Mar 8, 2025
Gerolstein
On the first fasting weekend, the ancient pagan custom of driving out winter is observed in some places in the Eifel. A large iron wheel wrapped in straw is rolled down the "Baarlay" while burning as darkness falls. This is meant to greet spring and drive away the harsh winter. The older custom states that the quieter the wheel rolls, the better the year will be. Afterwards, eggs and bacon collected in the village are consumed. Alternatively, there are also "Heedeligkooche" (buckwheat pancakes) made with sparkling water from the Geeser Drees. The total length of the hike is approximately 10 km. Please remember to bring a flashlight.
